The Trilemma
The Trilemma presents three alternatives to the claims of Jesus to be God:
(illustrations from The New Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell, 1999, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 158)

1. LIAR

  • Jesus made false claims, and knew his claims were false
  • He made a deliberate misrepresentation
  • He was a Liar
  • He was a Hypocrite
  • He was a Demon
  • He was a Fool and he died for it

2. LUNATIC

  • Jesus made false claims, but did not know his claims were false
  • He was sincerely Deluded
  • He was a Lunatic

3. LORD

  • Jesus made true claims
  • He is Lord
  • You can accept
  • You can reject

As we move now to study the events of the last week of Jesus' life before crucifixion, focusing especially on his trial, remember that the claims Jesus made to be God were outrageous. They angered the authorities so much that the authorities put him to death.
